Winfred Wilson (Sonny) Poland, Jr., age 78 of Penhook and formerly of Ashburn, Virginia left his earthly home for his heavenly one on Thursday, November 8, 2007. He slipped away peacefully, surrounded by a few of the many he loved.
Sonny was born on January 6, 1929 in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Winfred Wilson Poland, Sr. and Ella Rector Poland; He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Ann McGahay and Ellen Bridges.
Left to cherish his memory are his “sweet bride” of 53 years, Joyce Boone Poland; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Neil and Anne Coffman Poland, Rick and Sarah Gruver Poland; his eight grandchildren, Kirsten, Caitlin, Ted, Cory, Chris and wife Lois, Stefani, Danielle and Lydia; his three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jeremiah and John; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Joan Poland; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and their “adopted daughter” Debbie Rakestraw.
Funeral services will be conducted from Penhook United Methodist Church 11 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2007 with Pastor Rick Poland and Rev. Judith Short officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank the special people of Hospice for their wonderful care of Sonny and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Carilion Hospice of Franklin County, 180 Floyd Avenue, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 11, 2007 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Penhook United Methodist Church.
