Yvonne Barker Hughes

Yvonne B. Hughes, 85, of Union Hall, Virginia, died Sunday, May 8, 2022 at her home on Smith Mountain Lake that she shared with her husband of 62 years, Walter K. Hughes.  She has resided in Franklin County since the summer of 1980.

Yvonne was born in 1936 at the home of her parents, Sara and John Barker in St. George Georgia. She was the third child of nine with three brothers and five sisters. She earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Berry College in 1958 and received her Masters from the University of Georgia in 1968. She taught math throughout her life, and retired as a math professor from Ferrum College in 1988.

Sh e married Walter K Hughes in 1959 and shared 62 wonderful years together.  Her sister-in-law Judy Hughes Shipes, sang “Wherever Thou Goest” during the ceremony, which became their cherished vow throughout their life together.  They moved countless times in the early years and lived in six states, together They visited all 50 states, 60 countries, and 6 Continents. Most notably New Zealand, Australia, China, Europe, and countless cruises.

Yvonne loved her family, flowers, and hummingbirds and preferred working in the yard to house work. “Anything she touched grew roots and thrived.”

She is survived by her husband Walter K Hughes Sr., three children Walter K. Hughes, Jr. (Lisa), A. Terry Hughes (Jennifer) and Pamela Hughes.  They have seven grandchildren, Melissa (Alex Peterson), Carrie (Graham Day), Jessica, Johnny, Sydney, Sara, Hannah, and two great grandsons, Charlie and Ben Day.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Franklin Heights Church Union Hall campus. The family will meet with friends and family beginning at 10 AM, with the service at 11 AM.  In lieu of flowers, Yvonne asked that donations be made in her name to her beloved church home, Franklin Heights Union Hall Campus, 527 Dillard Hill Rd., Union Hall, Va. 24176.
