Zellar Rakes, age 84 of Rocky Mount and formerly of Tanyard Village, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009. He was a United States Army and Marine Veteran of World War II and was retired from Stanleytown Furniture. Mr. Rakes was born June 14, 1925 a son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Rakes. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Hankins. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Randy Jefferson; son, Mark Rakes and friend, Sherin; former wife, Margaret Rakes; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Clary and husband Mike; brothers, Nelson Rakes and Paul Rakes; sister, Ruby Cash and husband Cecil; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Ronald Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post 6. Special thanks to Franklin Healthcare Center and Red Oak Manor for their care and concern.
